Welcome to the Stenhouse Primary School web site.

Africa Week

In celebration of our links with Embangweni Primary School in Malawi, we hold an 'Africa Week' at some point during the school year to widen the children's knowledge and appreciation of African Culture; with particular reference to Malawi and its neighbouring countries.

As well as the school curriculum adopting an African focus, classes are informed and entertained by invited guests.

You can read below about some of the activities that have taken place during our 'Africa Weeks'.
Primaries three and four have heard about life in Malawi from a V.S.O. worker who had taught in Blantyre for two years.

Primary Five enjoyed finding out about Fair Trade and Primary Seven contrasted the attitudes towards children's rights and responsibilities in Scotland and Africa.

Primary six heard about the Masai tribe and imitated their style of art making bookmarks which they sold raising £130.
The African artefacts exhibition which was set up by Primary Seven was amazing. That all the items shown were owned by adults or pupils of the school was particularly impressive.

At the end of the week the whole school assembles. Classes show off some the work they have done and everyone joins in the singing of our repertoire of African songs. Much of the art work produce is displayed around the school to remind us of a busy but enjoyable week.
One highlight for the whole school was a visit from the "Grassroots" company from Zimbabwe. Dressed in traditional costume, their dancing, singing and drumming were sensational.

After beginning the day by entertaining the whole school, they then went on to do workshops for smaller groups.

We look forward to their return visit.
